Rare Morgan Silver DollarShopping Comments Off
|
The Morgan silver dollar was minted in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Almost any Morgan silver dollar will be worth quite a bit of money because so many of them have been melted into silver bullion, but the rare versions of this coin will be worth a premium over the less rare versions. Some of the coins are considered rare based on where they were minted, and some of the rarer versions are rare because of the year in which they were minted. The more interesting rare Morgan silver dollars have mint-made errors.
The most expensive and valuable Morgan silver dollars were minted at the Carson City Mint. These are more valuable because Carson City minted fewer of the coins and because many of them come in plastic black holders and were never even circulated. The most rare version of this coin was minted in Denver using the San Francisco Mint die; there are only four of these special D over S Morgan dollars today.
Other special Morgan dollars include mistakes, like the eagle with too many tail feathers and the double reverse coin. There is also a double obverse Morgan dollar, which features Lady Liberty on both sides. Also, some Morgan dollars are extra shiny, and these are known as deep mirror proof like coins.
As for years, Morgan dollars that were minted in 1889, 1893, and 1895 are particularly valuable because they are rarer. The 1895 Proof is the most valuable of Morgan dollars, and you can expect to pay $100,000 or more for one of these.
